About Us

Age-friendly Cheshire West – Inspiring brighter communities and bringing people of all ages together to make Cheshire West and Chester an age-friendly borough.

In 2018, Cheshire West was successful in becoming part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities and the UK Network for Age-friendly Communities. Becoming part of the networks recognised the work being done and the commitment to making Cheshire West and Chester a great place to live and grow older.

What are age-friendly communities?

‘Age-friendly’ is a concept developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Age-friendly cities and communities are places where people of all ages are treated with respect, regardless of their age. It is a place that makes it easy for older adults to feel included and valued and stay connected to what is important to them. It enables people to be happy, healthy and active, even at the oldest of ages, and provides support to those who need it.

WHO worked with older adults to create a framework, which identified eight areas of everyday life that have the most impact on being able to live and age well. These areas include:

  1. Outdoor spaces and buildings
  2. Transport (and mobility)
  3. Housing
  4. Social participation
  5. Respect and social inclusion
  6. Civic participation and employment
  7. Communication and information
  8. Community support and health services

Becoming age-friendly is:

  • a journey of continual improvement
  • about developing an age-friendly perspective
  • focusing attention on the things that are important to all of us as we grow older.

Why do we need to be age-friendly?

Cheshire West and Chester residents are living longer, above the national average.

We are expecting that by 2035 the number of people aged 65 and over will increase by 46% to over 100,000. People aged 85 and over will more than double to almost 20,000 and the number of people aged 85 and over living alone will also double.

The fact people are living longer is great news and brings many opportunities, but not everyone has good health, or what they need to enjoy life as they get older. Many people are living day-to-day with long term health conditions and financial difficulties.

We want to ensure living longer also means living better in Cheshire West and that all our older residents and all of us, as we get older, have the opportunity to live happy, healthy, independent lives.

Becoming an age-friendly borough?

‘An age-friendly borough is welcoming to everyone: a ‘friendly borough’. A place where everyone is valued and has the opportunity to live a happy, healthy, active, enjoyable life and live life to the full as we grow older’

Being age-friendly is about thinking differently, developing an age-friendly perspective and taking action together with older members of the community to make positive change.

Together we want to create communities that work for everyone – enabling every person from the youngest to the oldest to be able to have the opportunity to live their best life possible by creating a friendlier, more connected, inclusive age-friendly borough.
